Self Storage Units are the Perfect Place to Hide Gifts from Nosy Kids

You’ve spent countless hours shopping for the perfect gifts that will make their mouths drop open with surprise and cause them to squeal with delight. But if you have nosy recipients in your home, pulling off that surprise can be difficult, if not impossible. While kids often have a hard time finding their shoes or jackets, when it comes to sniffing out hidden gifts, kids suddenly turn into Sherlock Holmes. Prepare and Store Your Landscaping Equipment for Winter

Good gardening and landscaping tools are expensive. Taking the time to clean them and store them properly, especially at the end of the season, will ensure they are ready to use in the spring and will help extend the life of your tools.

Before storing any of your tools, make sure they are properly cleaned and conditioned. Start by cleaning off any caked-on or dried dirt with a wire brush. If they are really bad, let them soak for a little bit first. Rinse them off and let them dry thoroughly. Next, sharpen or replace the blades on any tools that dig or cut. You can use a whetstone or file to sharpen them. Sand off any rust spots with fine sandpaper or steel wool. Once the blades and metal surfaces have been cleaned and sharpened, coat the metal with a lubricant or rust protectant. (more…)

Who couldn’t benefit from a little more space at home? A self storage unit is a great way to free up some storage space at home by relocating those items you don’t use regularly. Don’t Forget Storage Insurance!

One factor you need to consider carefully when renting a self storage unit is self storage insurance. Most self storage facilities, like AAA Self Storage of Topeka, offer good security features, like gates with security codes, on-site personnel, good lighting, and security cameras, which will help reduce the risk of theft. But even with these security measures in place, theft can still occur. And even the best security precautions cannot prevent damage from natural disasters, like fire, floods, and storms. Self storage facilities do not cover damage to or theft of items stored in a self storage unit as part of the standard storage rental fee. For this reason, self storage insurance is a necessity. Without insurance, you will be left high and dry if the worst case scenario becomes reality. (more…)

Free Up Space at Home by Storing Tax Returns and Other Documents in Self Storage

Now that tax season is behind us, you may be wondering what to do with all of your tax paperwork. Taking the time to properly store your tax documents may help prevent tax headaches down the road.

Tax documents need to be kept for a specified amount of time. How long varies depending on the action, expense, or event impacting those records, according to the IRS. You need to keep them for the time frame during which the IRS can audit a return or when you can file an amended return. In general, the IRS recommends you save federal tax returns for at least three years, including relevant documentation like W2s, 1099s, and any documents related to itemized deductions. Investment forms, such as IRA account documents, should be kept for a minimum of seven years, while bank statements and paystubs only need to be kept for two years. Some documents, like property records, should be kept indefinitely. (more…)

Most college students are considered somewhat transient since they are moving in and out of dorms or apartments every year. Dragging all of your possessions with you from one place to the next takes a lot of time and energy that could be better spent on studying for finals. Why not store your possessions in a secure self storage unit instead of toting it home and trying to find a space for it, just to lug it all back in a couple of months?  Apartments and dorm rooms are also notoriously short on storage space during the school year so why not give yourself some extra space by storing some non-essential items in self storage at AAA Self Storage in Topeka.
